SHADOWS SHAPES SPACES

These photographs were initially exhibited by the BBC in 2010, under the theme ‘Shadows and Lines’. This led to further exploration of this initial body of work, and became the springboard for this book. Overall, ‘ Shadows Shapes Spaces’ is an initial photographic illustration of how shadows interfere with spaces, with this focus being further developed in the sequel book ‘Silence the Shadows’. Several of the photos highlight how SHADOWS create geometric SHAPES, especially in empty SPACES.

THE CONCRETE TOWER

The Pirelli Towers located in Milan, Italy, is a skyscraper that functioned as Pirelli Tyres Company's first factory. This brutalist architecture is reflected through the solid background colours, and emphasises the skeletal structure of the building. These colours were selected as they complemented the harsh, geometric silhouette of the tower.

THE THREE ANGELS

Experimentation of fluorescent background colours on the Angel of the North contemporary sculpture by Antony Gormley. This iconic sculpture is widely recognised and grew a lot of public attraction in the North East of England. By experimenting with bright background colours, these images allow for a juxtaposed vision, shifting the focus not onto the famous sculpture, but to the impact the colours have.

LITTLEHAMPTON TO SOUTHEND ON SEA

This book explores a glimpse insight into scenic British beaches, from Littlehampton to Southend on Sea. In particular, Littlehampton is known for its calm environment, and lack of exposure to man-made amusement parks. The sequencing of the photos show a gradual drift in people turning towards fun fairs, arcades and piers as a source of entertainment, leaving the viewer to question their dependency on these man-made structures in providing enjoyment.

the polar dress

The Polar Dress Is an experimental concept by which patterns are created on the fabric of  a material using repetitive photographic images of a subject. The subject in this instance being - countryside hedge borders, was captured using a Polaroid film camera. The image taken was then repeated several times to create a patterned effect which was then printed on silk fabric. To show case the printed fabric, the Halter-Neck dress design was used, which is a type of dress that has a neck strap with the back of the dress generally exposed.
